Columbia University’s Jerome L. Greene Science Center Recognized in 2015 ACEC New York Silver Award
Columbia University’s Jerome L. Greene Science Center was recognized with an American Council of Engineering Companies New York (ACEC NY) Silver Award in the category of Structural Systems as part of the organization’s 2015 Engineering Excellence Awards competition.
The Jerome L. Greene Science Center, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with Davis Brody Bond as executive architect, is a nine-story, 450,000 square-foot building that will be home to Columbia’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute. In addition to state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities, the ground floor of the Greene Science Center will house retail space and the Center for Education and Outreach, offering a variety of programs on the brain, mental health, and neuroscience for K-12 students, teachers and the community.
“ACEC New York’s Engineering Excellence Awards represent the best work taking place each year among the vast and impressive projects in the greater New York metropolitan area,” said Philip Pitruzzello, vice president of the Manhattanville Development Group. “The complex work at the Jerome L. Greene Science Center is deservedly on that list. We are proud of the honor as we build a first-class building to match the world-renowned research that will be taking place inside it. The foundations and structural system include slurry wall panels, drilled shafts, extensive excavation, and a structural steel frame.”
Tectonic, a multi-disciplinary engineering firm based in Mountainville, N.Y., received the award for the firm’s work providing Special Inspection services on the project. Tectonic provided technical and administrative services as the professional engineer for special and progress inspections in accordance with contract documents, and to ensure compliance with the NYC Department of Buildings and all applicable jurisdictional codes. The firm also developed a testing plan for the quality control report and quality control certifications and documentation necessary to document materials, equipment, workmanship, fabrication, construction and operations in compliance with the requirements.
The Engineering Excellence Awards, an ACEC NY hallmark for more than 40 years, honor member firms for design achievements of superior skill and ingenuity. In 2015, awards were presented to 100 ACEC New York member projects in the following categories: studies, research, and consulting services; building/technology systems; structural systems; surveying and mapping technology; environmental; waste and storm water; water resources; transportation; energy; industrial and manufacturing processes and facilities; and special projects. Projects are judged on a rigorous set of criteria, which includes complexity, innovation and value to society.
