Winter Chill Precautions

Dear Members of the Columbia Community,

An arctic blast is expected to send temperatures to as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of 20-below zero, with possible snow accumulation Saturday and the worst of the cold expected Sunday evening. Reports are predicting temperatures could reach their coldest point in 20 years.

In the face of this frigid weather, Columbia University Facilities has been working hard to keep building temperatures at a safe and comfortable level.

In advance of the cold weekend, there are a few things you can do to help:

  • Stay warm. Freezing temperatures can cause life-threatening health conditions. Dress appropriately by wearing layers and keeping your head and extremities covered.
  • Be careful. Safety is our priority – use caution when navigating around campus.
  • Be in touch. If you see an unsafe condition, please immediately call our Facilities Services Center at 212-854-2222. We are open 24/7 and are prepared to handle your calls.
  • Take precautions before you leave. By making sure all windows are closed, leaving all radiator valves and fan coils on, clearing clothing and furniture away from heaters and making sure all faucets are off, you will help save energy and reduce the risk of frozen pipes and the damage it can cause.

We appreciate your support and patience as we work together to keep our campus safe, beautiful and functional. Please stay safe and warm.

Sincerely,

Frank Martino
Vice President of Operations
Columbia University Facilities
