End of Summer Campus Construction Update

Dear Colleagues,

As we begin the academic year, we would like to update you on the construction activity taking place on and around the Morningside Campus. We have successfully completed our planned summer program, and construction activity will continue into the academic year as we work to create the kind of space and facilities that support the University's core educational and research missions. Highlights include:

NORTH CAMPUS

  • NORTHWEST SCIENCE BUILDING: Excavation has progressed well for our new 13-story interdisciplinary science facility. The excavation at the corner of Broadway and 120th Street is anticipated to be complete by the end of October. Installation of the foundation and new superstructure will commence in early spring 2008. We will be closely coordinating with schools and centers on the north campus to minimize impact on activities due to noise.
  • URIS HALL: Building on last year's successful lobby renovation, work is being completed on the second and third floors to improve corridor space, classrooms and provide locker areas for student use. New lighting, floor and wall finishes now create an inviting atmosphere. In Watson Library, 34 new light-filled study rooms were created and power and data outlets were added to the library floor.
  • HAVEMEYER HALL: Work on the Lambert Snyder Lab 500 level will continue into October and will provide for laboratory improvements including new casework and benches as well as energy efficient fume hoods, lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and telecommunications.

CENTRAL CAMPUS

  • COLLEGE WALK: One of the most visible improvements is College Walk, where new asphalt pavers, granite curbs, new turf, plantings lighting and a new drainage system now provide a restored sense of place to central campus.

EAST CAMPUS

  • JEROME GREENE HALL: Work has progressed as planned to enclose a portion of the roof level/ 9th floor of Greene Hall. This important new space will provide for much needed faculty offices. The steel structure and concrete roof-deck have now been enclosed. Completion of the interior of the floor area will occur in the spring of 2008. Lobby improvements are now complete with a security desk, new lighting, and furniture.
  • WIEN HALL COURTYARD: Work is complete on the installation of new utilities infrastructure (steam and chilled water lines, telecom conduit and fire and domestic water lines), re-landscaping and new paving.

SOUTH CAMPUS

  • BUTLER LIBRARY: The final phase of the Butler Library renovation is continuing. Façade repairs on the east, west and north sides and much of the rooftop infrastructure work have been completed, as well as tier 800 stack level which contains graduate carrels. The remaining work on the south façade and the rooftop will continue through June 2008). To access the rooftop, scaffolding will remain on the south and east sides until the completion of the project.
  • HAMILTON HALL:The 600 and 700 level classrooms and various offices have received new finishes, as well as upgrades to heating, cooling, electrical, data and telecommunications systems.
  • RUGGLES: 14 suites have received new finishes, hard wood floors and doors as well as kitchen and bathroom renovations and new appliances.
  • JOURNALISM: Renovations on the 100 and 200 levels for a multi-purpose gallery space for faculty, student and visitor interaction, student services offices, Career Services offices, and Journalism library will continue through fall 2008. The relocated admissions suite and various offices on the 600 level are now complete. The new glass addition on the plaza between Furnald Hall and the Journalism Building housing the new student lounge will open in November.

MANHATTANVILLE

  • STUDEBAKER: The fifth floor is now complete and occupied by Columbia University Information Technology. Space on the 1st through the 4th floors will be completed this fall when Columbia University Human Resources and Columbia University Finance move in to the 3rd and 4th floors. . Interior and exterior building and site repairs continue to take place on and off campus. The work that has been completed includes renovations and refreshes of bathrooms, classrooms, common areas and teaching labs as well as sidewalk repairs and ADA upgrades. In addition, New York City Local Law 11 work (ongoing) requires periodic inspection and repair of facades, windows, roofs, retaining walls, and entrance stoops.
