Columbia University has undertaken a project to expand the capacity of the central chilled water plant, which is located in the University's Power House. As part of this project, it is necessary to use a crane to install cooling towers on the roof of the Fairchild Building. Weekend activities for Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18 are completed. As a result:

  • The crane is being dismantled and will leave the premises on Sunday, July 18, 2010.
  • The Grove will be closed on Sunday until 5:00 p.m., when the crane is fully disassembled.
  • There will be no parking along both sides of 120th Street from Broadway to Amsterdam Avenue. This will allow for the parking of the trailers with the equipment. The Teacher's College parking lot entrance at 120th Street WILL still be accessible. NYC Department of Transportation will be patroling, ticketing, and towing illegally parked vehicles.
  • Single northbound and southbound traffic lanes will be formed on Amsterdam Avenue between 118th and 120th Street. During the actual lifting operation, traffic will stop in both directions. New York City Department of Transportation will be on site to monitor traffic and parking.
  • Pedestrian traffic along the east side of Amsterdam Avenue will not be affected. Flagmen will be located along the west side of Amsterdam Avenue to stop or redirect pedestrians to the east side during lifting operations. No pedestrian traffic will be allowed in the Grove area.

The following buildings can be reentered without restrictions:

  •           Fairchild Building
  •           Computer Science
  •           Engineering Terrace
  •           Schermerhorn Extention
