Columbia's efforts to "go green" have been recognized once more, as the University was recently awarded a certificate of reuse by the Institution Recycling Network (IRN) for its contributions to IRN's Surplus Reuse Program. From 2008 to 2010, Columbia University Facilities oversaw the donation and shipment of more than 4,400 pieces of surplus furniture, totaling over 228 tons, to relief efforts in six countries and three different local charitable organizations through IRN's assistance. A mixture of kitchen equipment, residential, school, and office furniture will be reused in Jamaica and Honduras, as well as in New York.
