Dear Public Safety Friends,

Another success story to share with the Columbia University Community:

A research student lost her laptop on a crowded D-train in Lower Manhattan. Not only did she lose her laptop but all her important files. She remembered that she joined CU Public Safety's Operation ID Program (a unique NYPD number engraved) and Mac Phone Home (stolen laptop recovery program). She immediately notified us and an alert was put on her Mac computer.

That evening a good Samaritan noticed the engraving and the warning sticker on the back of the computer and immediately notified us. The number engraved was traced back to Ms. Li.

Operation ID is FREE and EFFECTIVE, property engraved is registered to the owner from New York to California.

PC Phone Home, stolen laptop & PC recovery program is free through the CUIT website www.columbia.edu/acis/software/pcphonehome. Follow the instructions on this link to down load PC Phone Home.

Mac & Vista users can call CU Crime Prevention at 212-854-8513 to set up a quick appointment. Both programs are FREE.

Please share with students, faculty and staff in your areas.

Thank you,
