College Walk Construction Projects

This summer, Facilities and Operations has initiated several projects centered in and around College Walk, aimed to improve campus grounds and accessibility.  Among the projects taking place include retractable bollards at College Walk, permanent accessibility ramps at Kent Hall and Low Plaza, and the removal of some diseased trees on College Walk.  See below for construction updates for the projects.

Campus Grounds Construction Update for August 7, 2019

College Walk Bollard replacement (in progress on Amsterdam Avenue side)

• Fencing was removed and the east side entrance of College Walk was opened on Friday, August 2
• A new electrical panel and final hydraulic line was installed
• The controls panel installation will take place on August 7 and August 8
• Preliminary testing is tentatively scheduled for August 9 and formal testing will be held on August 12
• Final punchlist items to take place the week of August 12, which includes painting the hydraulic power unit, installing stainless steel covers, cleaning of the guard booth, and sitework

Low Plaza and Kent Hall permanent accessibility ramps

• Steps adjacent to the Low Plaza ramp have been replaced
• The railing will be installed around the ramp in the coming weeks
• Work on the Kent accessibility ramp has commenced

Campus Grounds Construction Update for August 1, 2019

College Walk Bollard replacement (in progress on Amsterdam Avenue side)

• The bollards on the east side of College Walk are nearing completion
• The Public Safety guard booth will be replaced
• On Friday, August 2, the fencing around the College Walk gates will be removed and the entrance will reopen
• Intermittent closures of the gates may occur as the bollards undergo testing
• Bollards will be installed on the west side of College Walk next year

Low Plaza and Kent Hall permanent accessibility ramps

• Granite installation on the Low Plaza ramp has been completed
• Steps adjacent to the ramp are being replaced
• The railing will be installed around the ramp in the coming weeks
• Work on the Kent accessibility ramp will commence the week of August 5 that includes site grading

Campus Grounds Construction Update for July 26, 2019

College Walk Bollard replacement (in progress on Amsterdam Avenue side)

• A controls package that operates the bollards is being installed
• Concrete is being poured for the base of the Public Safety guard booth and in the vault that houses the bollards
• The guard booth will be replaced at the entrance of College Walk in the coming weeks

Low Plaza and Kent Hall permanent accessibility ramps

• Granite has been laid down and is being installed
• The railing will be inserted around the ramp

Campus Grounds Construction Update for July 17, 2019

College Walk Bollard replacement (in progress on Amsterdam Avenue side)

• Additional excavation will commence on Thursday, July 18 at 9 a.m. and is expected to continue intermittently through Friday, July 19.  Sound mitigation measures have been installed (plywood-framed enclosure with sound-absorbing panels around the work site).
• A new concrete base will be poured for hydraulic pump equipment

• Granite is being installed over the next few weeks

Campus Grounds Construction Update for July 11, 2019

College Walk Bollard replacement (in progress on Amsterdam Avenue side)

• Rebar installation, electrical conduit tie-in, drainage, and concrete pour is in progress

Low Plaza and Kent Hall permanent accessibility ramps

• Additional concrete will be poured to fill in slabs
• Granite was delivered this week

Campus Grounds Construction Update for June 24, 2019

College Walk Bollard replacement (in progress on Amsterdam Avenue side)

• Installation of additional sound mitigation measures completed (plywood-framed enclosure with sound-absorbing panels around the work site)
• Excavation/demolition of existing bollards is in progress.  Approximately three to four days of demolition remain. The schedule for the remaining demolition work is being determined, designed to minimize the impact to the campus and local community.

• Digging/excavation at Low Plaza is complete
• Rebar installation and forms for the ramp foundation walls in progress
• Concrete pours in progress (expect to see concrete trucks on College Walk)
