Columbia Magazine Profiles the Grounds Team's Efforts to Protect Columbia's Oldest Tree

July 01, 2019

Columbia Magazine profiled Columbia's oldest tree on the Morningside campus, the American Sycamore located in front of Mathematics, in its summer issue.

The article interviewed Grounds Manager Bradley Larson on the tree's characteristics, who explained that the American Sycamore is a strong species of tree that can live up to 500 years old.

Larson also provided details on the efforts made to protect the tree during the renovation of the Mathematics pathway last summer.  The Grounds team employed methods that included hand digging the soil to protect the large structural roots, and adding extra water to the entire root system to ensure the tree had more than enough moisture.
