Columbia University Brings Minority-Owned, Independent Boxing Gym to Morningside Heights

November 22, 2023

HIIT The Deck NYC, a minority-owned and community-centric boxing gym, has signed a lease with Columbia University to open its second location in Morningside Heights.

Founded in 2020 by former professional fighters Stephen Frank and Ronson Frank, HIIT The Deck NYC got its start by offering high intensity, boxing-inspired fitness classes at Pier 17 to provide an outlet from the stresses associated with the pandemic. One year later, the team opened its inaugural indoor gym opposite the pier at South Street Seaport, delivering 60-minute classes that combine boxing fundamentals, conditioning and core training to elevate heart rates. Classes are held seven days a week, catering to all levels, with small class sizes that enable instructors to focus on participants' form and technique. The gym also offers one-on-one and semi-private training sessions.

HIIT The Deck’s new 1,500 square-foot location at 2872 Broadway (between W. 111th and 112th Streets) is anticipated to open in late 2023.

“We’re all fighting for something in our lives, whether it's fitness goals, academic success or personal growth. With that said, HIIT The Deck is more than just a gym; it's a tight-knit community where we fight together, side by side, and motivate each other to do our best. Our team has built an incredible boxing community at our Seaport location, and now, we're bringing that same energy to Morningside Heights. We’re here to inspire Columbia’s students, faculty and neighbors to come together in the ring,” said Stephen Frank, co-founder of HIIT The Deck.

Columbia owns and manages retail space across the Morningside and Manhattanville campuses, and its long-standing retail approach favors businesses that bring a variety of amenities and experiences to Columbia and its local communities. HIIT The Deck will join several other local businesses that have recently opened or signed leases in Columbia buildings in Morningside Heights and Manhattanville, including Method Collective, FIELDTRIP, Ban Ban Shop, Miznon, and Sapp’s Restaurant.
