New cooling towers were loaded onto the roof of the Jerome L. Greene Science Center today in support of the construction and operation of the Columbia Business School buildings at the Manhattanville campus.
The cooling towers were installed as part of an ongoing expansion of the Central Energy Plant, a facility that provides chilled water, high pressure steam, and electric power across the Manhattanville campus. The plant, located below the Jerome L. Greene Science Center and Lenfest Center for the Arts, includes energy efficient dual-fuel boilers, chillers, and piping distribution under city streets.
The Central Energy Plant expansion includes additional, energy-efficient mechanical and electrical equipment that will be installed in new space under W. 130th Street, on the rooftop of the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, and a new emergency generator on the roof of the Studebaker building. Extensive piping and electrical conduits will interconnect the new equipment to existing piping and electrical systems to provide an integrated distribution system for the Manhattanville campus.
The new equipment in the expanded plant will provide energy and utilities to support the construction activities for and eventual operation of the new Columbia Business School buildings. Columbia’s Manhattanville Development Group is responsible for the design and construction of the Central Energy Plant, working closely with Columbia’s Operations team. Manhattanville Operations is responsible for the daily functions of the Central Energy Plant and the Manhattanville campus.
