Grove Improvement Project

This week, the University will begin a renovation project at the "Grove", the University's central waste management and recycling facility located at Amsterdam Avenue and 119th Street. The Grove serves as an access point to the Engineering Terrace parking garage as well as several areas of upper campus.  

The project will include the installation of vehicle barriers to help control the flow of traffic into and out of the Grove and enhance public safety. The underground infrastructure work for the project is scheduled to be substantially completed by mid-September; the vehicle barriers will be installed over a weekend in early November. 

As with any construction project, there will be some temporary inconveniences and impacts:

NOISE

At times work may be noisy, especially during the removal of the existing concrete underneath the roadway which will involve jackhammers. We are scheduling much of this work for nights and weekends to minimize noise. 

RESTRICTED PEDESTRIAN ACCESS

The pedestrian entrance to Schermerhorn Extension from the Grove is subject to closure based on project conditions. Should that entrance close, pedestrians will be directed to the nearest campus entrance. Please also note that pedestrians will now be required to show their CUID to gain entry to campus at the Grove entrance.  

UNINTERRUPTED ACCESS FOR PARKERS

Engineering Terrace Garage parkers will retain uninterrupted access to the garage Monday-Friday, as during construction at least one vehicle lane will remain accessible to the garage. Saturday parkers may be relocated to the IAB Garage - if so, advance notification will be given. Upon completion of the project, Engineering Terrace Garage parkers will continue to use their current AVI tags, which will lower the barriers automatically.
