Columbia University Brings Innovative Chinese Noodle Restaurant to Morningside Heights

January 27, 2025

Columbia University is enhancing its retail portfolio offerings in Morningside Heights with the lease signing of South of the Clouds, a Yunnan-inspired Chinese noodle and fusion restaurant.

South of the Clouds specializes in mixian from the Yunnan Province of China, featuring long rice noodles paired with meat and seasonal vegetables, and served with or without broth. In addition to mixian, South of the Clouds will serve a variety of hot and cold appetizers, rice bowls, and desserts.

The new South of the Clouds location at 1187 Amsterdam Avenue (between 118th and 119th streets) will be the restaurant’s second outpost in New York City, joining its original Greenwich Village location.

The signing of South of the Clouds is consistent with Columbia University’s long-standing retail approach which favors local businesses that bring a variety of amenities and experiences to the diverse Columbia community and surrounding neighborhood.

The restaurant joins several other local businesses that have recently opened or signed leases in Columbia buildings in Morningside Heights and Manhattanville, including U-Bar and Grill, Haji’s, Upside Pizza, Softside Ice Cream, Universal Taco, Oasis Jimma Juice Bar, HIIT The Deck, and Method Collective.

South of the Clouds is anticipated to open in April 2025.
