James Beard Award-Winning Chef to Open New FIELDTRIP Location Near Columbia University’s Morningside Campus

October 04, 2022

Columbia University’s retail portfolio is expanding with the recent signing of FIELDTRIP, a fast-casual rice bowl shop by James Beard Award-winning chef JJ Johnson.

Founded in 2019, FIELDTRIP’s new location at 2913 Broadway (between 113th and 114th Streets) will be its third in New York City. To Johnson, rice allows us to connect with different cultures across the world as it’s found in almost every cuisine and community. Influenced by global flavors and techniques, FIELDTRIP offers a selection of rice bowls inspired by different cities, including seafood gumbo, braised beef, fried chicken, veggie, salmon, and shrimp bowls. In addition to rice bowls, salad, veggie bao buns, crab pickets, sweet plantains, and more will be available.

Columbia University has a long-standing retail approach which favors local businesses that bring a variety of amenities and experiences to the diverse Columbia community and surrounding neighborhood. FIELDTRIP will join several other local businesses that have recently opened or signed leases in Columbia buildings in Morningside Heights and Manhattanville, including Loco Coco, Trudy's Ice Cream, Oliva Tapas, Manhattanville Market, Hex & Co., and Sapp's Restaurant.

FIELDTRIP is anticipated to open in spring 2023.
