Electric fleets, carpool and car share incentives, and bicycle-friendly amenities help Columbia earn top performer for transportation in the 2018 Sustainable Campus Index.
Columbia Facilities and Operations donated 51 unused and gently used stoves and ovens to several local organizations as part of Sustainable Columbia’s ReUse program. The combo gas stove/oven units became available as part of the gas to electric conversion that is taking place at the East Campus residence hall.

With the end of both the Academic and Fiscal years, we understand that many of our colleagues may be considering or already planning to undertake a capital renovation or improvement project in the coming year that will require support from the Planning & Capital Project Management (CPM) team.
While we currently are hard at work on our portfolio of Summer 2018 projects, we are already thinking ahead to next year. So if a renovation project is part of your plans, it’s never too soon to notify us, particularly if your project is time-sensitive or if the construction phase of the project must occur during the summer months when the campus is less active.
The best way to inform us about your plans is to submit an online Project Request. Visit http://facilities.columbia.edu and log in with your UNI and password to “Initiate a New Construction or Renovation Project.” You will be asked to identify the purpose and need of the project, proposed space or location, the project funding source, desired schedule, special requirements or considerations, and a general scope of work.
e’s BAR, an upscale, casual bar and restaurant, has signed a lease with Columbia University to open a second location in Morningside Heights, joining its original Upper West Side location.

Campus shuttle system transitions to electric buses, reducing emissions by 70%
Facilities and Operations installed new electric vehicle charging stations at 560 Riverside Drive and upgraded existing stations in the Engineering Terrace garage (ETG) and International Affairs Building (IAB) garage this year.
There’s no better time than the present to clean! Cleaning your office or living space creates more space and can also help the environment. Columbia University Facilities and Operations and our partners across campus want to help. As part of our award-winning "Clean + Go Green" program, we will make large bins available across campus – including the Manhattanville campus for the first time – at no cost to you for the recycling, reuse or proper disposal of large, unwanted items. Best of all, Facilities and Operations will separate and recycle your items. That way, when you clean, you "go green."
The State of New York awarded Columbia University $5 million from the Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program (HECap) for the expansion of the Central Energy Plant, a facility that provides chilled water, high-pressure steam, and electricity for Columbia’s Manhattanville campus.
The new Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science space for Data Science, on the fourth and fifth floors of Mudd Hall, has earned LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) under the Interior Design and Construction rating system.
LEED, or “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,” is the nation’s most prominent program for the design, construction, and operation of green buildings.
The space, renovated from the former Engineering Library, now provides offices for many of Columbia Engineering's faculty and others who are affiliated with the Data Science Institute.
Congratulations to our Facilities and Operations graduates who successfully balanced the demands of a full-time job and graduate school for their intellectual and professional development.
Although Columbia University remains operational throughout the year, the summer months provide many faculty and students with a well-earned respite. Facilities and Operations uses the summer to complete projects that can only take place when students are away, such as residence hall renovations, and exterior projects that require warmer weather. Other construction projects are slated for summer to take advantage of a smaller impact on the decreased campus population.
The summer of 2018 includes a wide range of projects taking place from the Morningside campus up to the Baker Athletics Complex. Of particular interest are several disability access updates, including exterior ramps, a new interior lift, and restroom accessibility updates.
The 2018 Annual Campus Steam Shutdown is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. with service restored at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018. This shutdown is necessary to facilitate needed repairs and maintenance to the campus steam system that cannot be performed during normal operations.
