Although Columbia University remains operational throughout the year, the summer months provide many faculty and students with a well-earned respite. Facilities and Operations uses the summer to complete projects that can only take place when students are away, such as residence hall renovations, and exterior projects that require warmer weather. Other construction projects are slated for summer to take advantage of a smaller impact on the decreased campus population.

The 2018 Annual Campus Steam Shutdown is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. with service restored at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018. This shutdown is necessary to facilitate needed repairs and maintenance to the campus steam system that cannot be performed during normal operations.
University Hardware and Housewares has signed a lease with Columbia University to combine and relocate its stores to a single location at 2906 Broadway, adjacent to the New York Public Library branch between 113th and 114th streets. The new space consists of 3,245 square feet on the ground floor, more than double the size of the previous two locations combined.
Three new retail tenants within Columbia University’s retail portfolio are opening in the Morningside Heights neighborhood. The new retail kicked off earlier in February with the soft opening of H Mart, an Asian-inspired grocery store, and is being followed by Sliced by Harlem Pizza Co.; and Elysian Fields Café, a full-service Mediterranean restaurant.

Columbia University has initiated a comprehensive life-saving device and training program to help save lives on campus in the event of cardiac health emergencies requiring the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). It involves the installation of AEDs in locations across the University, along with trainings to increase the number of campus personnel certified to respond to instances of cardiac arrest and use an AED when appropriate.
Columbia University Facilities and Operations is offering paid internships for high school students living in the local community, who are looking to gain real work experience before graduation. Previous work experience is a plus, but is not required.
The paid internships begin on July 9, 2018 and end on August 17, 2018.
Interested students who meet the requirements below should apply by May 18, 2018.
Tanya Pope, Assistant Vice President of Supplier Diversity and Business Integration, helped lead a panel on New York’s Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) process at the 2018 New York Build Expo.
At the annual event, which brings together vendors, buyers and experts from across the construction industry, Pope emphasized the University’s commitment to working with and supporting diverse vendors.
Showing a strong spirit of service, Public Safety recently provided a significant donation of unclaimed clothing to Columbia Community Service (CCS)’s clothing drive.
The clothing drive, part of CCS’s annual appeal, provides gently used garments to neighborhood service organizations. This year, items are going to The Riverside Language Program, which helps new immigrants and refugees, and Cathedral Community Cares, which provides a neighborhood clothing closet for people in need or who are returning to the workforce.
On Friday, March 9, Public Safety held its annual Promotion, Awards, and Recognition ceremony. Vice President James F. McShane recognized 30 members of the department for perfect attendance, and 14 team members who earned promotions.
