More than 500 city-certified Minority, Women and Local Business Enterprises (M/WBEs) joined city and state agencies at Columbia’s Lerner Hall to explore economic opportunities during the 13th annual NYC Procurement Fair. Cedric Gaddy, AVP for Capital Finance and Administrative Support, welcomed participants to Columbia and invited them to build business relationships with the University.

Each summer, Facilities and Operations takes the opportunity to complete projects that can only take place with the reduced campus population that summer affords. This summer is no exception, with improvements coming to residence halls, grounds, academic and research space, disability access, and more.

After a productive academic year, the summer provides an opportunity for many students and faculty to take a well-deserved break and celebrate the accomplishments made throughout the year. For Facilities and Operations, the summer is an ideal time to perform a wide range of improvements, large and small, as some can only take place when the weather is warmer or the campus is less populated.

New owners have signed a lease with Columbia University in the former Nussbaum and Wu space at 2897 Broadway to open an upgraded shop offering fresh bagels, specialty dumplings and more. The shop will be named "Wu and Nussbaum" in recognition of how much the local community valued the offerings at the former restaurant. The new owners plan to expand the foods offered, especially in the evenings with a variety of dumplings and a noodle bar.

The Forum, the third new building completed at Columbia University’s Manhattanville campus, has earned a third prestigious architectural honor, with a German Design Award in the Excellent Architecture category joining a Merit Award from AIA New York and a MASterworks Award for “Best New Building” from the Municipal Art Society of New York.

Unique collaboration bridges research to practice, bringing together faculty researchers, campus practitioners, and the student community.

The 2019 Annual Morningside Campus Steam Shutdown is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. with service restored at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019 to all campus buildings except for those on the East Campus steam service.

The buildings on the East Campus steam service include: East Campus, Casa Italiana, Faculty House, International Affairs Building, Jerome Greene Annex, Jerome Greene Hall (Law School), President’s House, Wien Hall, William & June Warren Hall, and William C. Warren Hall.  Service to these buildings will not be restored until approximately 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019 in order to perform additional investigative work on the steam feeder located under Amsterdam Avenue. 

On May 6, the CU Grow Vendor Development program hosted its first procurement event of 2019. Presentations were provided by CU Grow program alumni, representatives from within Columbia University Facilities & Operations, and a finance group that specializes in loans that enable small vendors to pursue large contracts. 

Children of Facilities and Operations employees accompanied their parents to work for the second annual Take Your Child to Work Day at the Manhattanville Campus on April 25.

Columbia Residential superintendents are now more knowledgeable about safety standards and preventing workplace hazards due to recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training.  

The Food Pantry at Columbia and Columbia Dining announced they will partner with national organization Swipe Out Hunger, as part of a continued effort to address hunger amongst its student community and the stigma associated with food insecurity.

With a 47 percent reduction in absolute GHG emissions at the Morningside campus, Columbia has exceeded its goal of cutting emissions by 35 percent over 2006 levels by 2020.
